When choosing a photographer, does color matter?
So you’re ready for a photo session but, you haven’t chosen your photographer yet so, you go online and type in “ Couples Photographer “ or “Photo Session for couples” and you get several hits.
You start scrolling down and you click on a website. You find one with stunning images that show emotion and feeling.
Just what you’re looking for.
You immediately feel drawn to the images in front of you and you start picturing yourself in the photos.
Now, you’re ready to contact the photographer . You’re excited and can picture yourself with your partner having a blast creating a similar story.
When people ask me what’s my favorite thing about being a photographer, the first thing that comes to mind is recording a moment in time. I know, that sound so cliche but, it’s true.
The second thing that comes to mind is telling a story.
All photographs tell a story, whether they’re posed or not, they all have a story to tell and I love that.
Over the years, I’ve had the honor of working with so many beautiful souls , creating and sharing their stories. And I’ve loved every minute of it. Getting to know my clients , hearing their love stories all while trying to capture snippets of it to create wonderful memories for them to cherish forever.
I can’t help it, I’m a romantic.
When photographing couples I pour my heart, mind, soul and passion for photography into every single image. It’s what drives me and in turn, it allows me to capture each moment creating special memories for my clients.
When you look for a photographer, what do you look for?
How the photos make you feel? Do you look for emotion, age group, color, race?
Do these things matter to you?
Why am I asking ?
Because even though we live in a world full of so many beautiful souls with different shapes, shades, colors and different phases in their lives, they’re still people who would not choose a photographer based on the color of their skin.
And that makes me sad and disappointed.
Now, before you get upset, stop reading this post or decide to stop following me on social media, hear me out.
I’m not saying that you should not choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable, what I’m saying is that I hope that you choose a photographer based on things like, the type of photography you’re looking for, how the images make you feel, and how you feel the photographer can relate to you in order to meet your needs.
Why am I talking about this?
Because being a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many different types of people ranging in a rainbow of colors. And age nor a persons ethnic back ground has never been an issue for me. The thought has never crossed my mind. I just love photographing people. That’s it.
I came across an article a couple of weeks ago that disturbed me.
Without going into too much detail, the short version is that the photographer was told that she would be more successful if her website showed more photos of whites.
It made me sad and angry but mostly sad. Do people really look at someones website and decide that because theirs not enough white people ( or black, asian, latino, indigenous etc. ) on the site that they decide to choose another photographer?
Or they decide because the person is black, they don’t want to be photographed by them?
Even if the images appeal to them or the photographer has the skills to deliver what they’re looking for?
I can’t believe that it’s 2022 and people still feel this way.
It is really really sad because, they’re so many kind, beautiful, and talented photographers out there with a good heart who create lovely images that really tell a story. And to think that they’re given the opportunity to create something magical and memorable because of the color of their skin or because of the photographs on their website.
It’s a shame because you could really be missing out on a great opportunity to work with someone who can really create images that tell your story.
Why it doesn’t matter to me?
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and photographing so many beautiful couples of all ages, shapes, shades and colors and I’m truly grateful.
I love people so, it doesn’t matter to me what color you are and I love the fact that we’re all different and not the same. It’s what makes us interesting and unique. And it’s what makes my career so enjoyable!
For as a long as I can, I will continue to create memories for every beautiful shade of people I come across.
No matter what part of your life’s journey you’re in.
And it is my hope that when you come across my website, you choose me because of the feeling that I’ve created that makes you feel welcomed, happy and excited to work with me no matter what your ethnic background, color, shape or age you are.
